Year-round, since 1998, the Istos Centre offers intensive Greek language courses for non-native speakers of all levels in the picturesque Greek island of Rhodes and special language courses for advanced students. The courses are indented for:

-People over 17 years old who wish to learn Greek or to improve their Greek while acquiring a deeper knowledge with Greece and its culture;
-Teachers of ancient or modern Greek.
- Interpreters and translators;
- Greeks and foreigners who would like to explore the Greek literature.
- Greeks and foreigners who would like to write in Greek (creative writing)

In the courses students may improve all their skills (listening, writing, speaking and reading) in Greek language. More that this, the Centre’s aim is to transform each course to a cultural experience. Thus, through a variety of guided activities (interviews, projects, lectures, pair work, etc.) students come in touch with the local society and learn more about Greece and its people.

The teachers are Greeks, specialized and experienced in teaching Greek as a foreign language. Our teaching method combines textbooks and traditional educational materials with other, less conventional sources, such as songs, newspapers, the radio, literature – employed according to the students’ level. Emphasis is given in the vocabulary and grammar through guided communicative exercises. Students also receive information about contemporary Greece, mainly through texts and videos from the Greek Internet, press and literature.

Each intensive course lasts for two weeks (40 hours). The groups remain small (2 – 7 students) and homogeneous, relevant to the level of the students. We try to keep the programme flexible. This means that students may participate for one, two or more weeks, according to their personal schedule. In addition, students can suggest the dates for their course, in the “schedule” page of this site.(Minimum duration for each private courses 20 hours in 1 week).

Private courses can also be arranged, any time of the year.

The curriculum is divided into 7 levels, according to the instructions of the European language portfolio: absolute beginners, A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2
